A evening hike nightmare....

When Alan was out of town we decided to take the kids up to the mountains to get pictures. After spending afternoon coordinating clothing and doing hair we headed up around 5pm. Our plan was to take photos and go on a short one mile hike. I work out all the time so 1 mile was described by sister as a "a little walk up the road". We began taking pictures, which turned out great. After millions of pictures Jacob announced he needed to use the bathroom. So we all went down the trail to use the bathrooms. After taking them I told my sister how glad I was that we had done that, "wouldn't it be awful to be the top of the mountain with a kid needing to poop". Good point. So we began our little "walk down the road" as we got to the trailhead Sydney announced a need to use the bathroom again. We had just been there so I wasn't feeling the need could be too urgent. I sent my sister on her way with the other three and headed to the bathroom. For some reason I retrieved my car keys from her as well. As we were walking towards the bathroom Sydney begins to cry and tell me she is going to poop. True to her word she did. EVERYWHERE. Shoes, legs, everything. My hands were caked in the stuff. In the good old port a potty there is nothing. No water, no sink, no paper towels nothing. She is screaming. I head to my car with a kid covered in brown stuff and me looking bad too (thank goodness I had keys). I keep extra stuff in a bag with wipes, hang sanitizer, underwear all that good stuff you need with small children. I knew I was in trouble before even arriving to the car because all that stuff was in a swim bag I had thrown out of the car as we were rushing off. I was hoping to find something to save me. NOT SO. I found two dry wipes from wiping faces and a bottle of water. I did my best to clean her off. At this point I have no desire to go on my little walk up the mountain even if its short. I have no choice though as my sister has got my other three and has no idea where we are. SO we head off with Sydney and no underwear (poor dear she was NOT happy). As we begin walking I realize this is not short or easy. Time passes and its all uphill, over creeks, and its getting darker. I am carrying my then dirty girl on my back and I am wiped out. I see no sign of my sister either. That doesn't bode well for how long I have to go I decide. After what seemed like forever I hear some voices in the distance. I eventually see Jacob and Lindsey at the top of a high peak. I finally catch up and wonder if my sister considers this hike more than the walk up the road. I don't want to say anything. I don't have too she is as surprised as I am. We continue up to Secret Lake. It's then that Sydney has to go to the bathroom again. This time I take her seriously. She goes under a tree (remember we have no wipes). We keep on going and going. At the top she goes to the bathroom again. After a few more pictures we headed back down where Sydney went to the bathroom again. People were stopping us commenting on how lovely the kids were dressed for a hike. Yeah they were all wearing dresses and brown sandals that were very dirty now. We had no idea what we were getting into at all. No water and no food. When we got home it was 10pm! My kids were starving. When I told Alan the whole story he said something about why would I take a baby hiking with diarrhea. I wouldn't ever do that. Sometimes you don't know these things before hand. Sometimes knowing would be better. SO thats part 2. Lovely huh.

Thank goodness the pictures were so nice. The kids thought it was a wonderful thing. They loved every minute (except being with out underwear Sydney hated that part).

I am with Angie. I would have followed that old rule that if you are lost, just stay where you are. Not because I was lost but because I didn't have the will to go on. What a trooper you are!! Its amazing how kids don't remember the bad stuff if you don't mention it.

Ohhhhh, truly a nightmare! I don't even know what I would have done! I am impressed with how well you handled it, though.:)

Wow, I was almost in tears just reading this. Poor Sydney! Glad you all got home with sanity in tact.

Don't you love it when things go bad at a time when you can't do what you need to to fix it. I don't think I would have been too excited to go hiking or camping again after a time like that.

You are my hero - I never would have made it!

I'd be crying right there next to Angie. I am so not good in those types of situations.

I don't blame Sydney..I would not want to go hiking without undies either.

I think as parents we have all been there. This is something that could have been written by me. I would have been so mad not at the child, but at the situation.
I love my husband to death, but honestly do they need to make comments like that? Seriously do they think we would have taken kids hiking had we known they had diarrhea and then gone with no wipes, unides, change of clothes? My hubby makes comments like that too when all I want is some support.
I hope Syd is feeling better.

it is amazing what we will do as moms. the gross stuff that we deal with & that will 'hinder' a trip, but not stop it. life is a real adventure eh?
I also cannot wait to see pics.

You have had your share of poopy situations :) How awful for that to happen anywhere - especially in the mts.! You are indeed a trooper and a very strong person - as is Sydney!

Aww. I feel like crying because I can feel all your frustration and pain. I can totally understand and that so sounds like something that would happen to me and mine. Sheesh!

And husbands DON'T know! One or two days here and there does not a mother make! I hate when they do and say things like that. Yes, I want to be covered in poop. UGH! ;o)

Wow that story trumps that last poop tale. I'm so sorry. I agree I would have just cried. I feel so bad for her & you.
It's amazing what us mom can do under pressure. If my hubby were handling the poop and it was on his hands, i kid you not he would have barfed.
Can't wait to see the fab pics!

Oh my! Part 2 is not that funny, I must say! I think I'd rather clean up the mess on the stairs than carry her (without underwear) up a mountain without anything to clean it with. You poor, poor dear!

That is my worst fear now that the girls are potty-trained. Being somewhere with no toilet and a kid who needs to poop.....SO stressful. It sounds like you handled it all VERY well.

HORRIFYING! that is a total bummer!

Totally terrifying story! Absolutely not funny! Hope you are mentally recovering (I'm not sure I could - I'd probably be still up the mountain shaking under a tree)

He actually SAID that to you? Sounds like something Michael would have said to me too. Yes dear, we KNOWINGLY forgot the change of clothes and wipes because we just KNEW she would have poop everywhere and we picked the hardest hike we could find JUST so we could have something to blog about! LOL

This is why I try to stay close to home with my twins. Michael always tells me to think the worst that can happen and then prepare for it.

I guess I should clarify here...

Alan called home and said, "what did you do tonight". I said we went on a hike with a toddler with diarrhea. He then asked why would you do that? I did not explain the whole story yet.

Of course he had the appropriate sympathy after I explained.

What a nightmare! Some day you will laugh at these things!! ;o)

Ahh you were such a trooper!!! So sorry! Look on the bright side (sounds like you already have), you did get some great pics and a story to go with. If we knew ahead of time what would sometimes happen on outings, we would never leave.

I totally understand what you mean by a one mile hike! I've learned that hiking one mile is equal to exercising about three miles uphill on a treadmill! Very difficult for little kids especially three year olds and one without panties. You'll never forget the experience!

In defense of my part in the debacle. I was totally mislead about the hike, which I honestly thought would be more like a little nature walk. It was very deceptive, starting out so beautiful with fields of wild flowers on either side of the almost totally flat trail. Then, bam! It's all up hill and you're wading through creeks, scrambling up boulders and even navigating over a patch of snow. Well, crusty ice. The kids loved that! Snow in August. Of course, luckily, I had been sent on ahead and missed the poop disaster. It was a great time for me and the other kids, even with the hike. Hailey was a trooper and walked almost the whole way.

I still can't believe what happend. Of all the luck! All I can say is adrenaline must have kicked in to get you through it. Atleast the pictures turned out super cute but man did you pay a high price for pictures. One day you will be laughing about that day!

There are no words.... wow! And you kept on with the hike. I would have packed it in and called it a day!

oh. my. gosh. i'm just catching up on your blog and admiring how beautiful your family is, then i get to this story. i can't believe everyone looks so happy in all the pictures!! it just shows that you must have great kids, with naturally happy dispositions! and you are amazing, i would have broke down crying when i got to the car and realized i had two dry wipes and a bottle of water to clean up my poopy child. it sounds like a new reality show, "mama fear factor"!

oh gross! i'm so sorry! you have inspired me to go put a "bathroom pack" in my car with extra underwear and wipes. you never know when you'll need it!
