Adventures in baby-sitting...

The other day I was chatting with a mom of older teen girls I was asking her about baby sitting etc... She suggested I start having Lindsey "baby sit" for me while I was at home and needed to get things done. This way I would be there to help in an emergency (and it would be legal ha ha). Obviously I would not leave a 9 yrd old babysitting alone. I had never thought about having her be in charge while I was home and it occurred to me that not only would she like it but she could use that experience. So being a busy week and me having a messy house I hired her for a morning. First I took her to get craft supplies etc... She began watching the kids outside. She helped them make visors, let them run through the sprinklers etc... After 1.5 hrs I had not been bothered at all. At that point she came upstairs and told me Sydney was crying to come inside and that I needed to help. I reminded her that she was in charge and that she should change activities and bring her inside (no brainer huh). So she brought them all inside, turned on a video and popped popcorn. Later she made them pb&j for lunch too. After I put them down for their naps I noticed a terrible mess in the kitchen. I had to remind her that part of baby sitting was cleaning it up. So she cleaned too. I got my entire house clean for $5. L I will absolutely try this again. Jacob helped too and earned $2.50. Lindsey was not in charge of Jacob (that would NEVER work).

Such a good idea! (I tried it once with my oldest but he and my 6 yr old fought the whole time over who was going to do what.. perhaps I need to throw the $ offer in and see what happens?! Wink)
BTW..Your daughters are adorable! (and a pretty handsome son too- Can't leave him out!)

That is a great idea. I will have to try it. Emily informed me the other day that her babysitting rates were going to be $1 an hour. I too would never leave her alone to babysit, but I think I will take her up on it for babysitting while I am at home.

Isn't this the greatest! We do this with Jentry, he helps us and and he likes that he earns a little extra money on the side it's a total win-win situation!

So great! I ask Jack to help me but I have never "hired" him. I think I am going to try it.

Oh I am SOOO going to try this. WIth Joseph, not Emma. He hates babysitting the twins so I can do things, but maybe I should wait til the twins are a little older.

I'm TOTALLY going to try this, but I'm not thinking it won't go as well. :)

EXCELLENT IDEA!

I did this a lot for my aunt growing up. I remember taking little community babysitting classes when I was coming around to babysitting age too. I took it with a friend to make it more fun, but it taught things like first aide, CPR and actvities to entertain kids.

Lucky you! What a great idea. The little girl down the street has offered to do this with us. I am seriously thinking about taking her up on the offer. :)

What a good idea. Good learning experience for her. I think that this just came naturally for me.... coming from a big family we were always "sitting" Kids love to have that responsibility and the safety of having you there to help. How nice of you to pay her..... our poor kids have to watch the kids for a roof over their heads, clothes to wear, food to eat! :D

what a great idea! we have a little gal that is 11 that always wants to babysit, but i can't LEAVE her either. i should get her some crafts and stuff and plan activities for them, and then it'll work out a little better.
