Leaping Lizards...

I don't like pets. I don't want pets. But my kids are desperate for pets. So the other night when we went on a family hike (little walk really) Jacob and Alan caught a lizard. I approved his arrival on the condition that he lived and stayed outside ALL.THE.TIME. Dylan was very loved. The day after the lizard joined our family he went in a carrier to visit our cousin Andrew's lizard. After several hours my sister in law Lisa called frantic. Dylan has escaped and was loose in her house. I was horrified for her. To teach her son a lesson she made Jacob take their lizard, Alex home. Upon arriving home with Alex Jacob was horrified. He hated taking his cousins lizard and told me, "I broke Andrew's heart". Alex was placed outside (no lizards loose in this house). After an hour and a lot of tears from Lindsey we went out to check on our visitor (we could never keep him) he was gone. I was horrified. I had to call my sister in law and admit that we had now lost her lizard. She told me that her husband was up trying to catch a replacement lizard for Jacob. After all this drama Alan arrived home and I told him the whole long sorted story. He goes outside and immediately finds Alex the lizard barried deep in the sand in the cage! He was there all the time! Before I could call Lisa my phone rang, she had just found Dylan on top of a decorative thing of wheat. It took her some guts to catch him and get him contained without actually touching him (yuck). Both lizards are now safe and all owners are happy. No more visiting will be permitted and the no inside rule is firmer than ever.

OH gosh! that was a much needed giggle today. so it would horrify you that we had a wild pet snake for 7 months in the house, i bought feeder fish for it and it got loose tons of times, and then had babies while free in the house after escaping . So fun to have pet lizards. outside is even better. glad all parties have returned safely.

What kind of lizards are they? Lizards are pretty cool. My brothers and I brought home all kinds of animals when we were little...my poor mother. Luke wants his own dog now and he thinks frogs are really neat. I'm all for it, but have a thing about animals being free now. They aren't meant to be caged. How do you explain that one to a kid who really wants to crawl through his grandpa's pond to find a pet frog?

Oh, and bugs. My brothers would find the freakiest looking bugs and keep them as pets. Be glad your kids don't want those as pets!! lol!!

I am sorry Laura, but that was really funny. I was not aware that lizards were that intelligent and sneaky. How two could be lost and found like that is amazing. I love the way you told that story and I am still laughing.
Makes me glad we don't live were it is hot and Joey may think he needs a lizard.
Poor kid he did want a toad one day. He brought it in and surprised me with it. I was eating dinner and he put it on my carpet/floor. Scared the ##$% out of me. I started yelling like it was a snake for him to get it out of my house.
(He was like 2 or 3 at the time) He took it outside with Jeff and was playing with it. Jeff later told me that he was a little too rough when holding it and Jeff thinks he killed it. That is why I think those critters need to be OUTSIDE too. Not in my home and not in the hands of toddlers.
Glad the are OUTSIDE!

That's just cracking me up! Glad both were found safe and sound. I am not a pet person either.
I told my husband we have kids we have not need for pets.
I kept hearing Leaping Lizards off of Annie in my head as I was reading this.

Sorry for the kids, but YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE, DESPISE, CURSE LIZARDS. YUCK!!!! They are rampant in South FL where I grew up. My sisters used to chase me with them. I would lock them out of the house (sisters, not lizards ;-)

That is TOO funny. I'm pretty sure we'll be petless... Grace actually just convinced a babysitter to get a pet ladybug while we were out. I talked her in to letting it go the next day so it could go back to its family. Now she really wants something else, but I do not!

I wouldn't be able to sleep at night with a lizard or snake in my house! I love dogs and cats only! I'm glad both lizards were found...sure there were two happy boys!

I once had a very adventurous 4th grader, who on an outdoor field trip found a lizard and snuck it back to school. I had no idea until the next day. I found it in a box that I was packing some end of year items into. I thought it was a rubber toy, so went to grab it, only to see it scamper around. I screamed and went to find someone to take it outdoors.

When telling the story to the class the next day, this student started giggling. Come to find out, the lizard had escaped from his backpack, as he intended to take it home. We all had a good laugh.

That is really funny.

I didn't know you found Dylan on a hike. Lyndsey said something about her cousin. So was the lizaed I saw your's or Andrews?

Emily was really excited about your lizard now she is trying to talk me into one, but I am with you on the no pets in the house thing. What will you do in the winter?
