Last week Lindsey found $6 outside by the curb. She was thrilled. I had to take her down from her euphoria when I told her she could only keep it if no one claimed it. The night before I had been on a girls night and when we got out of the car it was at that very spot. In addition my brother had also been over and parked near there. So I began asking around and while it seemed everyone thought they could possibly have lost it no one claimed it (knowing Lindsey found it). Anyway, it was then awarded to her. Then she began begging me to spend it. When I we got the store she had so many ideas of what she wanted to buy it was hard to find just one thing. It was only $6 dollars. In the end she bought a barbie but she really wanted her sister. I try to never buy things without them earning it so I told her she could have her sister (just $6) if she agreed to learn how to clean the bathroom. Fast forward to the next day when I asked her to clean the bathroom. Not as thrilled with her deal. But she complied. Anyone who knows Lindsey knows what might happen next. Lindsey is an expert negotiator and pretty soon had convinced Jacob to join the "fun". So Jacob and Lindsey began the lesson. At first Lindsey seemed totally horrified but after she realized rubber gloves were part of the deal she adjusted and even began to like it. Jacob cleaned the bathtub while she did the toilet. Jacob moved on to the counter. He was amazed at the impossible task of removing the dried tooth paste (tell me about it). It took a long time to get that off. He vowed to me to never do that again. They cleaned the entire bathroom and moved on to my bathroom. It took ten times as long but they learned how to do it. Lindsey was even asking when she could do it again, apparently she already wants more money!

That's a great lesson. Cleaning can be fun for kids...I"m glad Jacob thought so since he was brought on board with some negotiation! :)
Good job mom! I have been working with Jack on helping out around the house. Even though it takes longer and is never done to my standards, it is nice for me to get a little help and he feels good about contributing. THen they learn things like the tooth paste you spit out takes forever to scrape off:)
Nice job, Mom! Not only do you get out of cleaning the bathrooms you taught your kids a valuable lesson!! WTG!
I've been loving the fact that Emma is old enought to help out around the house! :)
oh I can't wait to be able to bribe my children in such a way!
I should clarify that this process of teaching them to work is not yet a relief to me. It took twice as long and it was hard to not just tell them to go play and then finish the job myself the way I like it. It took much longer. I have looked forward to the day where my kids could help around the house and I see now its a learning process and we are no where near the point where their help would be a relief. As they get to be teens, maybe.
Oh, I think I'm now caught up on your blogging too! I'm reading blogs rather quickly while the twins are napping, and of course I'm avoiding the piles of laundry that are waiting. Feb. was a crazy busy and stressful month and I read no blogs and posted only a couple of times on my own. I'm hoping for things to settle a bit! I'm bummed to see that I missed your ebay stuff. I'm thinking my Vivian could fit in your girls things. Next time maybe!
I think it is awesome that you are teaching them how to help at this age...it will only get better (hopefully) as they get older and get better at cleaning:)
That is great that you were able to teach her that just because you find money on the ground does not mean it is yours and getting them to do chores is a bonus. I know what you mean about it not quite helping though. After Emily and Joe clean the bathroom I usually have to go in and wipe it down a little. But they like to feel like they are helping and Emily is getting better at it.
Wanna send them my way once they have the routine down? :) Go, Laura! :)
P.S. I wore that black and white dress to church yesterday and got a ton of compliments. Have you worn your yet? I wore mine with the sash/belt around my waist, not in the belt loops to make it an empire waisted dress.
wow good for you. everyone at my house likes to clean the toilet. and the mirrors. they all fight over who gets to do it.
