The BIG clean out 2008...

Crawling out from a crazy week. Alan has been finishing a few rooms in our basement. We started with the only two rooms we could clean out. To do this we had to move all that stuff to the other unfinished areas. It's been a few months and those rooms are now wall boarded and close to done so Alan told me it was time to clean out the whole basement. Remember my post about Oprah and all the stuff? Well we had a lot of stuff (not as much as they did of course). Our entire 1200 sq ft basement was stuffed with stuff. What you ask? JUNK! I have dreaded this project but Alan had some time off so I had to give in and get it done. It wasn't great that I came down with a terrible cold. Worst one in a year. Aches, no sleeping at all at night. I worked with Alan from morning till late into the night feeling absolutely terrible. Alan worked a lot harder then I did of course but I was juggling the twins and trying to sort through all of the stuff. I hate these kind of projects because they seem to spill into the rest of the house and make everything a giant mess. We filled the entire dumpster and took 6 truckloads to Deseret Industries (like Good will). Oh and did I mention I was also in charge of a mother/daughter dinner for church yesterday? I was so glad when Friday came the dumpster was removed and I could finally take a nap. It felt like moving a whole floor of our house! My house is total chaos now. My basement is clean, my garage is clean but every inch of my house is a mess. No laundry has been done, no basic cleaning, every ounce of energy went into this project.

Day 1. My kitchen was stacked to the ceiling with bins eventually. Miserable huh?
Bags and Bags of stuff to donate.
Jacob had a friend over and they decided they loved throwing stuff in the dumpster!

On a good note... Alan has a lot more room to build in my basement. The rooms we are beginning to finish will be a playroom w/ a playhouse under the stairs and craft room for me. Maybe I can finally get scrapbooking again!

Congratulations on the progress. It probably feels good to get rid of so much stuff.

I also wanted to say thanks for the dinner. It was really nice and fun to get to do something to focus on Emily.

Good for you, I really admire that you are adamant about clearing out "stuff"- this would take forever for me to do and just thinking about makes me tired. At least you are doing it, messy house or not, you are doing it! I hold on to too many things...good things, but too many- I need to start a "get rid of stuff" project! I keep telling myself to have a tag sale.......I just don't want the hassle of going through the stuff- crazy, I know!

But good for you !!!!

OK, I know it was probably such hard work but I'm so jealous! About the cleaning AND a basement in general. So way to go!

I'm in a clean out mode myself - totally impressed with your efforts. That is one big dumpster! Strangely ours only come in far smaller sizes. I'll be dreaming tonight about how much you could put in that!

I can imagine how terrible it was to have to clean it all out but to be sick on top of it.. UGH! BUT on a bonus note: it is all done and I have to admit I am green with jealousy that you are getting an entire room dedicated to scrapping!!
What a dream that would be! You better post photos when its all done and your moved in!

I feel for you! I go crazy when just the sink is full of dirty dishes...it's a problem! It must feel good to have that big project out of the way though, right? How exciting to have your very own craft room! And a play room for the kiddos....a spot JUST for the toys-I love it!

Sorry you have a horrible cold. Just like a mother to trudge through a project that big no matter how crummy she's feeling. Hope it comes to an end soon.

Laura,
Holy COW! I mean seriously. When you need an industrial size dumpster to demo, throw stuff out, it's a huge project. And you were so sick. With a million other volunteering commitments and your regular mom ones. WOW. I'm glad you've survived, Laura. I'm super impressed, and SO glad this phase is almost over!

WOW. What a project! Our 950 sq ft basement had a lot in it, but not that much! It took so much energy, I cannot even IMAGINE what you went through. You are amazing!

That is one thing I hate about extra projects... everything else is neglected and it takes weeks to get back to normal. Good luck. I hope you are feeling better soon!
