Last week while working out I happen to catch a snatch of Oprah. It was on hoarding. It was a real shocker of a show. I came home and taped the episode (Oprah replays at midnight here) and I watched it all. It got me to thinking of a manageable way to reduce the clutter in my house. He recommends two bags a week of trash and goodwill and then stop the influx. Yeah I have stuff. So I started with my closet. I have saved a lot of clothes thinking someday I would fit into them again. So I braced myself and began the purge. I had a pile of stuff to throw out entirely, stuff to give to cousin, and stuff to give to Deseret industries (like Good will but run through our church). I began trying on all the clothing I had so carefully saved that have taken over my closet for many many years. Guess what? Sure they fit. Let me give you a piece of advice. Do not save this stuff. By the time it fits it will be out of style and you will wonder why anyone would buy jeans that go up past your belly button and make your (not so flat) stomach look twice as bad and don't get me started on the rear view on these jeans! So I am happy to report that after a whole day. 3 black garbage bags hit the trash, 1 box to my cousin, and 5 bags went to DI. Those bags were SO huge. How this all fit in there I will never know. What I do know is that I won't be hanging on to this stuff again. I actually need my closet for clothes I do wear. In this process I discovered I have a love for two items sweatsuits and jeans. Thank goodness my taste has improved over the years! I found a few treasures in my trash but most of the things I found I had a good laugh at myself.
Oh by the way I am by no means a hoarder but I do need some help getting my clutter under control.

way to go! that is always quite the process. i had learned to purge my stuff long ago. it's the kids stuff i have a hard time with. awesome! and think you probably blessed 10 people by cleaning out your closet. FABULOUS!
wooowho--- go you!
♥ I think it always feels nice to to de clutter! In fact it's time for me too...
AMEN! I often think back to our small one-bedroom apartment when we were first married. I wondered if we'd ever have enough stuff to rightfully fill it. HAH! How I long for the small 800 square feet worth of stuff! Here's to purging!
I could easily become a hoarder, but not like that lady on Oprah!! That was insane. I love clothes and shoes, so I have a lot of them. That's what I need to get rid of...clothes and shoes I no longer wear. It hard to de-clutter sometimes, though, isn't it? I'll sometimes look at something and think, well, I haven't used it in a year (or longer), but what if i need it one day? So i end up keeping stuff i don't need. And its hard to stop the influx. That takes discipline!
Way to go! For me I think that Clothes and scrapbooking stuff are the hardest for me to throw away. I still have the dress that I was wearing to go on my honeymoon. Yes I have gotten rid of other clothes, but I think that one just has sentemental value. I think I will get rid of it this week.
Thanks for the inspiration.
There's nothing like a good purge...I am always obsessed about WHERE I donate the stuff...you saw the post about my bedroom...that is mostly baby stuff I can't give up...
I saw that episode of Oprah too...I also got the bug to clean stuff out. Problem is, my husband hangs onto a lot of junk and I can't throw his stuff out:(
i never changed my size, I was thin and I am thin and I guess always will be.
clothes always fit on me even after years. but still I took some old and never wore ones out.
and that was also after I saw oprah couple years ago.
way to go!
You've got bling!
Oh man.. I am SOOO into purging right now. I am LOVING it. I did the playroom first. It is SO much easier to keep clean now.
Keep going girl!! I am PROUD OF YOU!!! When your home is less cluttered, more simple, your soul follows!
I gave you an award! CXheck out my blog!
Good to have a clear out and great to have a laugh!!
Good for you!!! I never watch Oprah, but happened to catch a few minutes of this episode. I was HORRIFIED at the amout of stuff that woman had in her house. It made me want to clean out every closet and storage area in my house.
Laurie took the words right out of my mouth. GOOD for you. Feels good, doesn't it? I just went through my closet and tried on a bunch of clothes that no longer fit, but I'm not quite ready to get rid of them yet.......:) I need to start ebaying some of the things, I think.
GOOD JOB! Thanks for the link to the episode, I have heard of it before, but am excited to check it out more. And I too, want to cut through my clutter~thanks for the inspiration!
We all need help getting the clutter under control! I LOVE cleaning out closets. It feels so good to get rid of dead weight and help people in the process. Good work! I think I'll go clean my closet right now!
I did that a few years ago -- threw out all the stuff that doesn't fit any longer. Those hoarder shows are just plain scary ... I know I keep more than my husband would like but the ones who just have paths... shiver...
How unfair, that Latree has not changed sizes! :(
I need to take this advice to heart and get rid of some stuff!!
