I need to picture this today. I wish I could jump back in time and enjoy these moments more feel them all over again.
We went to Hawaii when the twins were 13 months old. Lindsey was 6 and Jacob was 3.
To everyone including myself this seemed like an ill-fated plan. Believe me my expectations were not very high. I was still nursing the girls and the thought of managing to make it through the plane flight was enough to make me not want to go.
When we arrived in Hawaii what I found was amazing. We stayed in a condo right on the beach. I could sit in the sand outside the girls window while Jacob and the girls napped! The girls were so tired they slept like a dream. I spent my days enjoying every minute.

As with any vacation there were a few disasters....
I took a picture of my sister/brother in law. While kneeling in the surf it overtook me and I quickly put her cheapo camera out of harms way. Sounds wise until you learn that my brand new expensive camera was hanging on my neck underwater. Yeah some tears were shed about that one.

This picture cost me a lot!
Alan jumped off a cliff and seriously injured his ear. He was in pain the whole rest of the visit (this happened on day 2). Which resulted in two emergency doctor visits. It ruined his ability to do anything.

Last but certainly not least occurred mostly without my personal witness. On the return trip we were flying into LAX and driving home. Alan and I had purchased tickets for ourselves and the twins knowing a long flight and long drive home would be too much. As we were getting checked in we were offered a direct flight home bypassing LAX. It was a emotionally decision for me to separate from Lindsey and Jacob and leave them to fly home with their Grandparents and sister/brother in law. I was actually in tears. With Alan's ear he had been given medicine to hope to avoid it rupturing under the pressure of landing etc. A direct flight was much better for this so we did it. The flight was long and my arms nearly broke off holding the sleeping baby. I thought it was bad. Upon landing I called to see if they had made it to LAX only to find they had not left Maui at all. Flight cancelled left 2 hrs on the plane waiting. No more flights available. They were not given luggage or any personal items. The airport was closed and there was nothing done. They were left stranded at the airport for almost 2 days before Delta got them out. No compensation. No luggage! My niece was also just one was there sleeping in her mothers arms. It was awful for them. Thankfully they arrived home safely. Lindsey and Jacob remember this as an adventure having fun sleeping at the airport. Believe me EVERYONE was glad we took the other flight. Just the thought of twins in that airport was more than they could bear.

Jacob and Grandpa sleeping on the floor at the airport! Jacob is only three.
After reading the bad moments it might make you wonder how the good
actually outweighed them but I assure you it did. It's amazing to me that when you look back on memories the good ones shine brighter and the bad ones seem almost funny. I am glad for that. I am glad for memories they make the sunshine brighter even in the darkness.

OH my gosh! amazing story. way to go remembering the good. the pictures are amazing LOVE THE ONE OF JACOB napping in the bed. FABULOUS!
i can't believe the horror of the return trip! thank goodness for small miracles for you and the twins and your hubby! BUT OH MY GOSH! great post!
That's insane! What a huge blessing that you guys got a direct flight. I can't even imagine spending 2 days in an airport with my twins at that age!!!
First of all, you are a brave woman! We are taking our first family flight in a week. It is only 3.5 hours and we are going to grandma's house. I am in awe that you flew with 2 nursing babies to Hawaii. What a woman!
Even with the downsides, the vacation sounds like it was blissful. That photo of Jacob napping in Grandpa's arms is one of the more precious things I have seen. That photo will always remind Jacob of his Hawaiian adventure. Incredible!
Some of the biggest disasters are the best stories! And I also like how the good outweighs the bad and how the bad seems sometimes funny in the past.
what a great story Laura! That photo of Jacob brought tears to my eyes. Just beautiful. The trip sounds wonderful, and I love that the kids remember that trip home as an adventure!!
Wow what a trip! Sorry about your camera, I'd be crying too. Glad everyone made it home okay even if it took a couple extra days. Your the best story teller. And great pictures too.
:)Rachel
It sounds like it's time for another trip to Hawaii!!!
Two days in the airport? And without any personal items? Insane! I am glad you can look at that as funny now and mostly remember the good moments. (It's also good the twins were home with you!)
Maybe a NEXT trip to Hawaii can bring a better ending. :)
Two days at the airport? I would have been a basket case. I'm so glad YOU and Alan and the twins got out though. The thought of those girls crawling around the airport makes me sick. AWESOME pictures. I LOVE the one of Jacob with the white towel.
Oh my grief!
Are you willing to take another trip like that anytime soon?
oh, that does sound like a great trip, but i would have been so upset too, about the kids in the airport! i think they were in good hands too!
You are brave! I love it when something that you aren't quite sure about turns out to be an adventure and creates good memories:) The airport fiasco sounds horrifying....I do think the picture with Jacob and Grandpa is quite recious though!
I would totally go back again. This time I would not fly Delta EVER. They won't take care of you and they only have a few flights out a day. I would not fly out on the last flight of the day because that is a disaster. What kind of Airline doesn't put you in a hotel? When this happened before (it has happened to me before also in Maui) United put us up in a hotel and it was a minor inconvience. Delta was UNBELIEVABLE in this situation! Shame on them.
WOW! Laura that is crazy. I bet you were so stressed while you were at home knowing your kids were stuck in Hawaii in the airport.
It is funny what we remember. Thankfully it happens that way :) I would love to take the girls to Maui. I think they would have so much fun. You are crazy brave for doing it when your girls were only 13 months.
Your pics were awesome as usual. LOVE the pic of Jacob and grandpa. Priceless.
I bet Lindsey and Jacob thought that was a great adventure. This story confirms what I already knew...you are amazing. Traveling with one 1 year old is an adventure. I can't imagine twins.
I think it was a great vacation you had...
i am especially in love with these pictures and stories, as i am sitting here feeling the cool maui night breeze!! i am now a little nervous that we have the last flight home on sunday, though! we are with northwest, though. i like the picture of jacob and grandpa, priceless!
You are one BRAVE woman. I refuse to take my kids anywhere for another year. Driving 1300 miles when the twins were 4 months old was enough for me for a while, thank you very much! Great memories though. Michael and I are playing to go somewhere for a week in a couple years... Maui looks AMAZING! I'll have to keep that in mind!
Hi Laura--found you through Jim and Sarah's blog. So fun to see you and Alan and your beautiful family!!
What a crazy trip to Hawaii! I'm with you on the power of "looking back". It all looks so different from the other side ;-)
Looking forward to visiting your blog again!
Oh my goodness those were too adorable little twins...
Good thing you took the direct flight! Great pictures... love the sleeping child, so sweet!
Holy cow! What a trip! I agree with whoever said it, you need another Hawaii vacation!
